SURREALIST
SELF-PORTRAIT
There is a
big window in the middle of a brick wall, the background is very basic. In the
window you can see a huge brown eye staring inside through the window. In front
of the window, a standing up black silhouette looking through the window. On
the floor, a full color and defined picture of the same silhouette stretches from
my feet outwards, in the manner of a shadow. The colors are mostly neutral and
dimmed, almost like black and white, except the eye in the centre, which is in
full color.
My surrealist
self portrait doesn’t have a pattern. There is a contrast between the neutral,
dimmed and slightly dark colors in the piece, with the bright brown color of
the eye and its brightness against the darker background. This draws the most
emphasis on the eye, which is what catches one’s attention immediately with its
bold colors and shapes. The angular and straight shapes of the background are
being contrasted with the curviness of the elements in the centre. The emphasis
lies in the eye, which is big and bright. The piece has a symmetrical balance.
All the elements are concentrated in the center of the piece. I think the
background and the elements come together well to create a surrealist sense of
unity.
The meaning
of this piece is surrealism n the sense of opposition from reality. In the
picture what we see in reality is turned upside down, and that is what is
emphasized in my surrealist self portrait. Instead of a body projecting the
shadow, here it is turned upside down and the shadow projects the actual body. I
think the colors that are dimmed contribute to this surrealist and mysterious
sense of strangeness and obnoxiousness. The colors are there, but somehow it
looks like it’s almost black and white. It also speaks to my personality, this
says that I am a closed up person.
