PERSONAL COLLAGE
A notebook
forms the base of this collage. A hand is drawing a pencil sketch on it of itself.
There are other pencil sketches included on the notebook, one family portrait,
a winning cup and a sketch of the Eiffel tower. There is also a text written on
it by hand, with hearts and smiley faces. There are also some objects placed on top of
the notebook, a necklace with an owl clock, a euro coin and a CD. The CD
reflection shows a city skyline with tall buildings. There is little color in
the piece; it has mostly neutral unsaturated colors.

The positions
of the elements don’t follow any pattern; they are place randomly all over the notebook,
both real objects and sketches. The elements and layers are distributed evenly
throughout the collage, which creates a symmetrical balance all over the piece.
The is a big contrast regarding the textures that come into this piece, there
are metals, pencil sketches, skin, paper, etc. which create and interesting
effect. The objects on top of the notebook are being emphasized; they bring
most of the attention while looking at the piece, as they pop out more, for
their darker colors and realistic textures, while the sketches blend in with
the background, creating a sense of unity.
This collage
has a personal meaning, each one of the elements present an aspect of my life
and memories. The sketch of the hand holding a pencil is a real sketch I drew, and
together with my own hand drawing it represent my passion for art. The portrait
presents my direct family. The cup represents the America’s Cup for yatch
races, the main reason I have been able to travel around the world, the cup has
taken me all across the world. The Eiffel tower represents my hopes for the future:
to be able to return to Paris some day. The typography on the top represents
the friendships I’ve had since kindergarten, and which still remain with me
wherever I go. The coin in the corner represents my place of origin, the
European Union. The owl necklace and CD are personal objects that I have
included as part of my everyday life. The skyline reflected on the CD belongs
to the city f New Zealand, the first faraway place from home where I lived, and
where I got in touch with the English language for the first time. Each element
of the collage says a little about me and about what I like, like drawing and
travelling.
I feel this
piece was successful. Although I think some of the elements could have been
included more neatly, it is not the typical collage. It has a mix of layers,
effects and textures that make it seem quite realistic and also interesting. It
really defines me: my past, my present and my hopes for the future. Each element
comes together to create unity in a composition that reveals who I am, which
makes it original and unique.
