PROJECTED IDENTITY

In my projected identity i have included personal objects to show my personality. The background is formed by a wheel of different colors. In the middle of the piece two hands are holding a big camera. Next to it, in the top part of the piece, are some objects: a nail polish, a pencil and sharpener, a seashell, a 5 euro bill, some sunglasses, an airplane ticket and a seashell necklace. In the bottom part, a ribbon forms letters to spell “identity”.

The piece has a pattern in the background, formed by the wheel of different color paints, on top of which are positioned the elements of the picture. There is a great contrast formed by the bright colors in the background and the dark colors of the camera. There is also a big contrast between the different textures of the elements and all the different shapes. There is emphasis on the letters at the bottom of the picture. They are bright, therefore stand out against the dark background and bring attention to what the piece is really about: identity. All the different textures and elements present a very interesting unity in the picture.

The meaning and message of this piece are to show my personality, every element in this composition says a little about my hobbies and likes. I am very interested in design, photography and I love art. I think this is shown with the creative background (drawn with nail polish), the camera and the pencil. I am interested in makeup and beauty and that is why I included the nail polish. The airplane ticket shows that I love travelling and have been in many different places, this is also reflected by the sunglasses, and the necklace I got when I visited Hawaii. The seashell belongs to a necklace and has a personal value because it was given to me by a close relative. The letters created by ribbons symbolize that I like being creative. This piece says a lot about me, because it is about me.

SCANNED EMOTION

In this piece I portray an emotion using a simple and common scanner: imagination. In the piece girl has her face between her hands, looking towards the scanner. She has her eyes closed in a face that seems like she is thinking or imagining something. Her hair flows upwards and out of her face. From her forehead brightly colored confetti flows out upwards creating a whole wave of color over her head. As it flows out different random elements appear. There are some blue and green curled gift streamers. There are also some pictures present: a picture of a tropical island, a picture of a candy heart and a cartoon football. The background is dark and the light is concentrated on the wave over her head and her nose and forehead.

I don’t think this piece has a pattern, as everything is positioned randomly and freely. The brightness and color saturation at the top symbolizing the imagination has a great contrast against the neutral and darker colors of the girl’s face. This drives all the emphasis not to the real face, but to what is happening over it, to the colorful wave. This also creates an asymmetrical balance in the picture, as most of the action is concentrated at the top part, leaving the lower part duller or less important. Even though there is a great contrast between the imagination and the face, between what is real and what is fictional, there is unity between all the elements, creating a visually interesting picture.

This piece portrays imagination in an idealistic way. The bright colors and appealing pictures and elements give this emotion a very positive feeling. Imagination is portrayed as something good and happy. The pictures on the top, which are random and have little to do with one another also symbolize how in the imagination anything is possible, whether it makes sense or not, as long as you are able to have the idea and visualize it. All the elements come together to convey the message that imagination is something positive and unique. This picture says a lot about me. It show my opinion of imagination, it shows how I think that imagination is a wonderful gift, and that one should hold on to it forever because to me it is one of the most important qualities of humans, to be able to invent and be creative freely with no kind of restraints.

ENVIROMENTAL SCANNER

This whole piece contains plants, flowers, leafs and other elements I found in the Golden Gate Park. In the centre of the piece, sprig leafs are arranged forming a little irregular wheel. Around this revolve different leaves. Most of them have brown or red colors and are long and thin. There are also pieces of tree bark, which form really interesting curved patterns and shapes. Some big green leaves add a pop of color to the background. Splattered around that piece are a few daisies which add brightness to the piece. Also randomly distributed are some eucalyptus fruit, which have pretty star patterns, making them look like rattles. On the left part there is also a golden bottle cap.

The piece has an irregular pattern. In the centre there is a wheel formed by the sprig leaves. The other elements revolve around it. It is a subtle and uneven pattern. I think the brightness of the flowers and the bright green leaves is being contrasted with the neutral brown color that dominates the piece. There is also a great contrast between the different textures and patterns of each element. The emphasis is concentrated on the wheel in the centre of the composition, where the brightness is concentrated and then spread out and also where the definition is greater (the picture blurs as it spreads out). There is a symmetrical balance in the picture, all the elements are evenly spread throughout the scan, creating a unity between all the elements even thought they have different textures and patterns.

The meaning portrayed by this piece is the infinite variety and forms that nature can take. There are millions of different species of plants that are completely different from one another, and can have a wild variety of different colors, patterns and textures. All the elements in the composition convey this message very well, because the piece is a mixture of different colors, textures and patterns, however all of them are the same thing: plants. I think this says about me that I value every aspect of nature, that I know that plants can be beautiful and have very interesting patterns and colors, and that I think that something doesn’t have to have bright and bold colors to be beautiful. Nature won’t cease to surprise you, you don’t have to go far to find intricate and interesting designs, you have them all around you wherever you go.

AD REDESIGN

Ads use persuasive text, image and appealing ideas to convince you to buy something. I took an advertisement promoting Pop Tarts, saying they were baked with real fruit and I turned the message upside down. The ad is set as a child’s picnic play set and the message now says: “baked with fake fruit”, using Pop Tart cut letters in bright colors. These are on a plate which  is on a picnic  tablecloth, next to the plate, on the top part there are some fake play set fruits in very bright and fake colors. On the right top corner is the Pop Tarts logo. On the bottom, a phrase says: “100% fake fruit in every Pop Tart”.

There is a contrast of different textures and layers: the picnic cloth, the metal cutlery, the plastic fruit and the Pop Tart letters, each positioned on top of the other. The saturation and brightness of the colors in the piece are emphasized, to bring attention to how fake and full of dyes Pop Tarts really are. It doesn’t have much symmetrical balance; most of the action is going on in the top part, where the fruit and the logo are positioned and where most of the emphasis is. The whole ad comes together to create a sense of unity.

The original message of this piece is meant to influence consumers to buy Pop Tarts, but now it warns people of the unhealthiness and artificialness of this product. The meaning of it is fakeness, it is meant to show that Pop Tarts have a lot of chemicals, dyes and artificial flavoring that make them really unhealthy. The elements work really well to show this meaning, as the plastic fruit give a sense of artificialness, and the environment of a kid’s make believe game does too. What this photograph says about me is that I am not fooled by what these companies may say, that only by seeing the appearance of these products and simply looking at the ingredient list, I can see that they are very unhealthy. I get concerned when these ads advertise that their products have real fruit, because then, what would they use instead of real fruit? Fake fruit?

CHILDHOOD MEMORY

A sailing boat is heading towards a bright blue. There is a group of seagulls flying in the also bright blue sky. We only see the prow of this boat, where a little girl stands, looking out into the sea. As the boat approaches a big buoy, we also see many ghostly and faded figures: a dock with a few boats in the bottom part of the piece, also the top of a mast with a person on the vey tip, coming out from the side. In the distance there also is a faded lighthouse in a tiny sand island in the middle of the sea.

The elements are distributed randomly throughout the piece, not following a strict pattern. The balance is not entirely symmetrical, as the elements seem to move more to the left, where the girl is. The clear and defined pictures of the sailboat, buoy and seagulls, with their hard edges, contrast against the faded and ghost-like elements, with softer edges. Reality (represented by the defined pictures) contrasts with what seems to be part of imagination or memories (represented by the faded elements) creating an interesting visual effect. The closest layer with the prow of the sailing boat with the girl holds the emphasis, as the girl represents the source of all the memories, giving a sense that the faded elements are figures that she is imagining or remembering. It is through the girl that we are seeing the picture. I think the piece has unity although some parts could be retouched.

This piece represents one of my childhood memories, when at summer I would go with my family on our sailboat offshore and would spend the whole day out on the sea. I think this piece successfully transmits the relaxing and calm feelings that experience brought and how those sunny and pleasant days were. It also transmits that I am a calm person who enjoys some isolation from time to time.

DREAM SCENE
My dream shows a flooded street. On both sides the buildings are on fire. The sky on the back is a bright blue color that turns white on the lower part where the street is lost in the distance. O the water there is a ghostly boat, sailing across the street. On the left side there is a girl riding a bicycle over the water surface along the street.

The background has a symmetrical structure, with fiery buildings on both sides of the streets, which are reflected on the water also on both sides, which also create symmetrical balance. There is a great contrast created by the yellow, orange and red warm colors on the buildings with the cool bright blues from the sky, and also between these bright colors and the darker colors and shapes on the bottom, like the boat and the person. These buildings are the element with the most emphasis on the piece because of their brightness. The dream has unity, the elements come together to create a visually interesting and surrealist dream.

I think this dream means confusion, because there are different elements going on at the same time: the street is flooded but the buildings are on fire; a boat is sailing in the water but at the same time there is someone riding a bicycle as thought it was a solid ground. The dream sends out a message of confusion and chaos, but also that two different situations, or maybe feelings might be happening at the same time, shown by the water and fire present together. This may say about me that sometimes too many thoughts and ideas are going through my head and I have to just calm down and stop thinking things over so much.

WARHOL SELF PORTRAIT
Warhol’s portraits have inspired and influenced many generations of modern art. this piece shows a portrait of me created in the same fabulous style. This composition presents 9 pictures of me, using different pairs of complementary colors on each, or changing the positions of these colors.

The piece is based on a pattern of the same picture repeated nine times, only changing the colors that compose them. The fact that I used complementary colors on each picture offers a great contrast in each picture, and also generally all through the piece. The use of opposite colors in the color wheel creates an emphasis on my face features, which are clearly marked. The portrait has a symmetrical balance, the action is distributed evenly throughout the whole piece and even though the colors are complementary, the fact that most of them are bright creates unity between them.

There could me many meanings for this piece and style. For me, the complementary colors represents opposite sides of a person’s personality and different faces of my character, it shows how on each person there is a good side and a bad side, that mix together to form their personality.  Think it relates to my community because I think it represents the clash of cultures there has been in Spain and which have mixed to form the culture for which it is famous for. The piece symbolizes happiness and the combination of opposites in a harmonious way.
